Sisters and Brothers,

Yesterday at 7:10 a.m., CWA Local 1103, CWA Local 1109, and CWA District 1 were abruptly notified that Optimum intends to sell the fulfillment side of its business to MasTec North America, Inc. This was the first and only notice the union received about this major decision, despite its clear impact on our members, our work, and our collective bargaining rights.  Any rumor — or any claim by the company or management — that the union was notified in advance is patently false. It is simply a lie.

By now, it should be clear the company is right at home lying to its employees. In fact, CEO Dennis Mathew’s just claimed the Optimum name change reflected “who we are and where we are going,” and that the organization was deepening its commitment to customers, employees, and the communities it serves.  That is some commitment.    

Again, we know what contracting really means. It means lower standards, lower wages, and lower accountability. It means giving our work to outside contractors who are not rooted in our communities.  And we need to fight back.  NOW…

As we stated in our mobilization and workplace meetings, we will track, document, photograph and video every instance of Optimum’s contractors performing our work, doing substandard or shoddy work, or engaging in unsafe practices.
